Visiting your OBGYN is an essential aspect of a woman’s life, but it might leave you feeling vulnerable. Making a trip to an OBGYN can feel more than a little intimidating for many women — but it doesn’t have to be! At Women’s Health Specialists, there is no room for judgment, and we are here to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible while receiving treatment.
While some topics may feel a little more embarrassing than others, our job is to make you feel secure discussing any and all medical issues so we can answer your questions thoroughly. There are several subjects you should always bring to your doctor’s attention, and we are here to tell you just what you should ask during your next OBGYN appointment.
#1. Medical History
Just like a visit with your general practitioner, there are a few housekeeping items your doctor will need to know to provide you with the best care possible. You may be asked:
- What medications are you currently taking?
- When was the first day of your last period?
- When was your last PAP smear?
- Have you ever had an abnormal PAP smear?
The answers to these questions provide a great starting point for your appointment, especially if you are a new patient at Women’s Health Specialists. We may have some of this information on record if you’ve been coming to see us for a while, but it never hurts to have a refresher.
#2. Sexual History
When talking about your sexual history, it’s normal to feel like you’re being put on the spot, but don’t worry. Our doctors are professional and easy to talk to, and we don’t judge! It is so important to have a conversation with your doctor about your sexual history to ensure you get the proper care and attention you deserve.
You may want to tell your doctor if you are sexually active and, if so, how many partners you have had. You should also tell them about any prior medical conditions that may affect your reproductive system, including sexually transmitted diseases.
We don’t ask for this information to make you feel uncomfortable. This is a shame-free zone! We just need to be informed about your sexual history so we can provide you with the best possible care.
#3. Low Libido
A low sex drive is extremely common for many women, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. It can be caused by medications, medical conditions, or even environmental stressors like work or family life. Talking with your OBGYN should be your first step in getting help with low libido. Our Women’s Health Specialists team can recommend tools, medicine, or counselors to help with this condition.
#4. Painful Periods
It is no secret that menstruation comes with its side effects, including cramps. However, excessive pain is not normal and could indicate an underlying condition like endometriosis or uterine fibroids.
Endometriosis affects approximately two to ten percent of women between the ages of 25 and 40. This condition results from the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus. Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths inside the uterus. Both conditions can cause excessively painful periods.
If you are experiencing painful periods or abnormal flows, tell your doctor so we can find a solution. There is no need to suffer in silence. Women’s Health Specialists can help!
#5. History of Trauma
If you have a history of trauma resulting from sexual assault or rape, you may feel more discomfort than other women when it comes to an OBGYN appointment. You may even seek to avoid it altogether. We understand that these appointments can be incredibly stressful for you, but you are not alone, and we are here to help.
With a trauma-informed approach, our Women’s Health Specialists team can take steps to make you feel more comfortable in the doctor’s office, so you can get the treatment you deserve without feeling retraumatized.
#6. Family Planning
Family planning can be intimidating, but with the range of options available in our modern era, it can also feel empowering. Whether you’re looking to start your family soon or want to put it off a few years, we are here to help you.
From oral contraceptives to intrauterine devices (IUDs) to genetic carrier screening, the team at Women’s Health Specialists makes it easy for you to choose an option that suits your needs. If you’re interested in using birth control, feel free to talk with your doctor about which option may be right for you. Similarly, if you’re looking to get pregnant, we can provide valuable advice.
