Meet Robert L. Summitt, Jr., MD

Education

Dr. Robert L. Summitt, Jr. is a 1979 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Rhodes College. He completed medical school at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in 1983 and completed his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in 1987.

Following residency training, Dr. Summitt completed his fellowship training in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery at the University of California, Irvine from 1987 to 1988.

Experience

Following his fellowship, Dr. Summitt returned to Memphis where he joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee department of obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Summitt achieved the rank of professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology and served as chief of the section of urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery.

From 1996 to 2004, he also served as the Residency Program Director. He‘s currently Clinical Professor, OB/GYN at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Summitt's regional tertiary referral practice focuses on care of women with urinary incontinence, genital prolapse, and other disorders of the female urinary tract. In addition, he has focused on treating gynecologic diseases that have typically required hysterectomy, offering alternative therapies to surgery.

He has performed research and published more than 60 journal articles and book chapters in his chosen field, developing a nationally-recognized expertise in urogynecology and pelvic surgery.

Achievements & Recognition

Dr. Summitt was recognized in Good Housekeeping magazine as one of the top physicians for women in the United States. He is also listed as one of "The Best Doctors in Memphis" by Memphis Magazine.

Since 2003, Dr. Summitt has annually been listed as one of the "Top Physicians" in Obstetrics and Gynecology by Consumers' Research Council of America 2003-2007.

Dr. Summitt is one of four Urogynecologists in the country who have been elected to the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology's subcommittee on urogynecology and female pelvic medicine.
